Dr. Evil & High 5s!

SPOON CELEBRATED ITS 5TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR ON 20TH FEBRUARY 2005. IN AN INFORMAL RETROSPECTIVE Q&A SESSION WITH DR.EVIL, KEY SPOONSTERS DAVID SOO, FELIX FONG AND KEVIN LEE REFLECT OVER THE PAST HALF DECADE, THE PRESENT AND CUNNING PLANS FOR THE FUTURE.

Dr. Evil : "G'day Spoonsters. Opening statements?"

Felix: "Let me start by saying - what a ride! We've had our fair share of excitement and adventure over the 5 years playing hide-and-seek with the many states of the Asian Economy and the industry in general."

David:
"I concur. The last few years must have been the most tremulous entrepreneurial period in recent history. Especially so in Asia. Hey, didn't CNN just celebrate their 20th anniversary?"

Kevin:
"Yes they did. The future is looking ever-so-bright though. The big boys are being ruffled at the moment but boutique creative shops like Spoon are doing well."

Felix:
"Oh. How's the coffee business coming along?"

Dr. Evil: "Asia's where the Mojo is these days. I've traded a certain coffee brand for that famous soya sauce company now. People don't know it but there's Major Mojo in soya. Anyways why the name Spoon?"

Felix: "Spoon is good. Short, snappy and memorable! The name has worked very well for us. A spoon also has a head to begin and a tail to end. Good Feng Shui. Or so my mum says."

David:
"There's a certain Karma Sutra position titled Spoon that I'm quite fond of. Like Soya. Heaps of Mojo. Sex sells."

Dr. Evil: "Why not Fork then?"

David: "That's a bit too obvious isn't it? Subtle suggestion is sexy."

Kevin:
"There's an urban myth around that the name Spoon was in honour of westerners in Asian restaurants who ate fried rice with chopsticks."

"It's always been our mantra from day one to do what we love, love what we do and create a sustain-able and successful business built on that. We will continue living out that philosophy."

Dr. Evil: "What's your Grooviest moment over the past five years?"

Felix: "One for me was picking up the only gold pencil awarded to Singapore for Spoon at the 2003 One Show Awards in New York. The other would be one of the many moments we got courted by various parties interested in buying us (Spoon) out."

David:
"An isolated X-box moment a while back in the studio when I kicked everyone's butt at Halo and another isolated DJ session in the studio when I pulled off a perfect 30 minute set to a discerning audience."

Kevin:
"The whole 5 years was groovy. But the moments that groovify me are when I get positive feedback about Spoon and the work we do. Over the years we've managed to carve a little fame in the industry. People know of us. Our peers like us and what we do too. That's kinda groovy. The next 5 will be groovier with more gravy up top I'm sure."

Dr. Evil: "“Various parties wanted to buy you out? Who? When? Why didn’t you sell?"

Felix: "Well. There were quite a few. In particular during our earlier days."

David: "Blame the new economy and the whole internet boom in those days. There was a lot of VC money around then."

Felix: "Yes. Their price was right but their vision wasn't. We had a few offers from traditional advertising brick-and-mortars too. We entertained a few but at the end of the day the vision and character differed so till today we remain independent and proud."

Dr. Evil: “I’ve got my underground lair hidden away in a secret island. Why Singapore for Spoon’s headquarters?”

Felix: "I'm Singaporean so it's a natural choice. Having said that Singapore is perfect geographically for a company like ours. We do work for clients in Japan and Hong Kong and hope to do more for others in the region. I also have to admit that I'm closet fan of the whole hub thing. "

David: "The environment in Singapore is very conducive at the moment. Change is taking place rapidly and times are exciting. The internet is coming back in a big way and Singapore has great infrastructure. A very wired country. Singapore has great food too."

Dr. Evil: “What kinds of projects are you working on and for whom? Designing any special weaponry that an evil villain with a world domination complex might find interesting?”

David: "No weapons of mass destruction, but we’re currently working with a number of financial services companies to enhance their marketing arsenal. We've just helped HSBC Insurance with their main website. We provide a multitude of services across various media for Prudential Asia in Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia. We've worked quite extensively also with various government organisations. IDA, Manpower Ministry and the National Environment Agency to name a few."

Felix: "We've carved a little niche for ourselves recently with the Arts community. We do a lot of work for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, The Arts House and Singapore Dance Theatre. We have also done a lot with MediaCorp Radio and MediaCorp TV. China Airlines out of Taiwan is another one. We helped develop their inflight entertainment system and interface."

David: "Not forgetting a recent appointment by Samsung to develop and enhance their main Singapore online presence. That's notable."

Felix: "Some in the market have this perception of us as doing only interactive work. Spoon does a whole lot more other work that is very exciting too. This is probably due to the higher visibility of our web work and the awards we've won for that. We do a lot more other advertising, design and brand communication work that we're just as proud to showcase to those who are not as familiar with Spoon."

Dr. Evil: "Any cunning million dollar plans for the future? Take over the world perhaps?"

Kevin: "Yes, we have plans. But smart and intuitive plans worth more than a million I hope. With the recent set-up of new Spoon spin-off company One Ton Cinema I think we are strategically well-placed in two high growth areas with tremendous potential. These 2 areas being creative and content. Content creation is a new area we are very excited about. The internet is coming back in a huge way too and we're positioned to tap into that as well. It's always been our mantra from day one to do what we love, love what we do and create a sustain-able and successful business built on that. We will continue living out that philosophy. Come what may."

Dr. Evil: "My next shaggadelic sequel is due out soon. Want free tickets to the premiere?"

Felix: "Sure thing. Is it Paris Hilton this time?"

Kevin: "You selling your time machine? Nifty little gadget. Great wholesale potential."

David: "No thanks. I just bought a projector. I'll wait for the DVD."

Dr. Evil: "Zip it!"
